The Power of Prediction

2018-12-13 [Petri]

As I wrote in in this blog entry, the New Horizons probe is getting ready to fly past a Kuiper Belt object called “Ultima Thule”.

In order to gain more information of this relict from the early days of the Solar System, it was calculated that Ultima Thule would block the light of a distant star for about one second.

That event was only visible for a very narrow band crossing South America and Africa.

Senegal was chosen as the observation site, and 21 locations with telescopes were set up. Due to the rainy season in Senegal, only three of them managed to observe the occultation, the results of which were used to estimate the size and form of Ultima Thule.

The point of this story is that by accepting the Globe Earth Model and the mathematics that follow from it, an event like this could be predicted, and the prediction proven to be correct by actual observations.

I'm still waiting for a Flat Earth Model that can even predict the most spectacular celestial events there are: solar eclipses.
